New Vermeer reclaimer meets the challenges of urban pipeline work

Vermeer R400T is designed for urban jobsites with limited space

Feb-2014

PELLA, Iowa — Vermeer has introduced a new product to its pipeline installation equipment line. The R400T joins the R9x12T reclaimer — introduced in 2010 — as a self-contained drilling fluid reclaiming system. The R400T was designed for the growing demands of underground projects — whether in congested, urban utility work or large pipeline installation — while minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment. Reclaiming drilling fluid is becoming more standard in HDD applications because of the expense of hauling and disposing of drilling fluid.

“The reality is right-of-ways are shrinking and contractors need to maintain a small footprint, especially when working in town,” said Jon Heinen, Vermeer pipeline business segment manager. “Not only that, but fluid disposal is increasingly expensive. Vermeer has provided a reclaiming system designed for these applications so that contractors can stay efficient and productive, reduce operating costs, yet be a good steward of the environment.”

The R400T is a 6,375 gallon (24,132 L) drilling fluid reclaiming system that utilizes a series of shakers, cones and screens to filter out solids from the fluid, leaving bentonite and other additives as reusable, clean drilling fluid. An onboard, high-pressure pump delivers fluid to the drilling rig at a constant flow of up to 400 gallons (1514.1 L) per minute at 1,100 psi (75.8 bar) to maintain efficient drilling. With the pump as part of the reclaiming system, the pump and cleaning system are designed to work at the same flow rate, helping to maximize productivity. Pump and cleaner capacity are equal, allowing for higher efficiency.

“Vermeer aimed to bring a machine to market that matches the cleaning capacity to the pumping output for a more efficient and user friendly system,” Heinen said.

The R400T is a self-contained system that is transported on a single triple-axle trailer. The less equipment that contractors are required to transport means overall savings and less equipment to maintain on the jobsite.

The R400T will be available mid-spring 2014, initially in regions where ultra-low sulfur diesel is available.
