Midwest Mole makes historic first pullback through rock using AXIS laser guided boring system
A trenchless natural gas pipeline installation project that spanned 5967 feet (1818.7 m), is the longest horizontal directional drilling (HDD) bore attempted in Chesapeake Energy Corporation’s history related to the massive natural gas deposits of Barnett Shale.
When Gary Davidson, president and co-owner of DrillTech Inc., based in Clarksville, Texas, reviewed the results of soil samples provided him by project owner Regency Energy Partners, he felt confident the mainline natural gas pipeline project his company was hired to complete would be a fairly routine trenchless installation.
It took a contractor who was receptive to an innovative new installation approach, a good deal of patience and a whole lot of determination — after two previous attempts by other contractors using drills and air hammers were unsuccessful — to finally conquer a pesky 800-foot (243.8 m) stretch of tough Georgia blue granite. Hence, project owner Coweta County Water and Sewer Authority put their faith in DeKalb Pipeline Company to emerge victorious.
